Dean of Research

Dr. Ankush Mittal received the B. Tech. in Computer Science and Engg. From the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1996 and Master's in 1998 respectively. He was topper in graduate studies at IIT-Delhi and was awarded Samsung Fellowship for his excellent performance. He was nominated for outstanding PhD award by Electrical and Computer Engg, The National University of Singapore in 2001.

Dr. Mittal was a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science, National University of Singapore for two years. He has also worked as an Associate professor at IIT-Roorkee for seven years. He has also worked as a Dean (Research) and Director (Research) at College of Engineering Roorkee, Uttrakhand. He is presently serving as Director (Research) at Graphic Era University, Dehradun, Uttrakhand.

He has contributed more than 220 research papers in journals and conferences of high repute with significant impact factor, many of which are in IEEE transactions, Springer and Elsevier journals. He is also a co-author of a book on Bayesian Network technologies published by Information Science, USA.

In 2006, he was conferred young scientist award from the National Academy of Sciences, India for his leading work in E-learning and image processing. In 2007, Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) conferred young scientist award to him for his contribution to the field of Information and Communication Science & Technology. On September 5th 2008, he received outstanding teacher award for his excellent teaching at IIT Roorkee (given only to two faculties out of all departments). Dr. Mittal's research received international recognition and he was conferred with IBM faculty award in 2008.

He has guided 8 Ph.D. thesis, 37 M. Tech. thesis and 22 B. Tech. thesis at The National University of Singapore and IIT Roorkee. Students guided by him have won several awards at national level such as INAE best B. Tech. project award in 2005 and 2010, IBM outstanding PhD award, Agilent Engineering award and IEEE ICISIP 2005 best conference paper award. From 2005 to 2010, his students have bagged best B. Tech. project award at E&CE department every year.

His research interest includes image and video processing, content based retrieval, E-learning, and bioinformatics. He is on the editorial board of several international journals and reviewer of several IEEE transactions.

He is at present serving Graphic Era University, Dehradun as Director (Research) and facilitates publications, grants, and research aptitude of faculty and students at GEU.

  • Young Scientist Award 2007, Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) young scientist award, in field of Information and Communication Science & Technology (including Computer Sciences). ISCA introduced young scientist’s award in different disciplines in January 1981. The award carries a sum of Rs. 25,000/- besides a Certificate of merit. The award was given by the President on India during 95th annual Indian Science Congress in January 2008.
  • Young Scientist Award 2006, The National academy of Sciences, India, 2006 for contribution in E-learning in the country. The award consisted of 25,000 Rs., a citation and a medal, and was conferred at IIT Bombay by the Academy on 8th October 2006. The National Academy of Science is the oldest science academy in India and the award was given on the Academy’s Platinum Jubilee Celebration, which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India.
