Department of Petroleum Engineering, Graphic Era University organised Guest Lecture by Padma Shree  Dr. Rabi Bastia

Padma shree Dr. Rabi Bastia petroleum explorationist  of international repute visited Department of Petroleum Engineering, Graphic Era University on 20th November 2018 and delivered a guest lecture “Dynamics of oil and gas : the elixir of life”. Dr. Bastia presented a highly informative overview of the journey of petroleum industry, role of knowledge and technology, current and future scenario, geopolitics, volatility of prices, and exploration and production challenges and opportunities. Small stories with big messages made the presentation very interesting.

Dr. Bastia, in his presentation, addressed the current perceived threats to petroleum industry. Dr. Bastia said that the thinking that there is no more petroleum left in subsurface is not correct. With global examples as evidences, he established that there have been exploration cycles and every time in every cycle new  oil had been found with new exploration concept and new technology as input. He emphasized that the earth will never fall short of petroleum, “we may be short of ideas to find it”. Thrust areas for petroleum would be the unexplored or less explored areas like deep waters, permafrost areas and basin below basin. New ideas and new technology will play the major role in finding petroleum in such areas, he added.

Dr. Bastia expressed his great faith in the new generation of petroleum geoscientists and petroleum engineers in the endeavour to find and produce oil and gas and to contribute towards growth of petroleum industry. He called upon students to keep themselves fresh and vibrant with knowledge, global research, new ideas, innovations, technology and skills. This is essential for the growth of industry and for their personal growth, he added.

Dr. Bastia talked about global warming and climate change and the efforts to reduce pollution. He showed that solar energy and wind energy are slowly gaining ground. However, there are technology and cost challenges, he added.  Dr. Bastia emphasized that petroleum will continue to remain as a major energy source in future and the petroleum industry will continue to grow.  His mantra for students was that self motivation, dedication, thinking ahead, generating new options, hard work, positive attitude, humility and humanity are essential attributes for success.
