Graphic Era Faculty sets new record for world’s longest lecture; doesn’t stop before 140 hours

Arvind Mishra of Graphic Era University dedicated his record 139.42 hours marathon lecture on “Scientific computations” to the profession of teaching and to the world’s academic community. Calling it a day at 1:42 a.m. in the morning, Mishra, faculty at the Mechanical Engineering Department of Graphic Era University, bettered the current Guinness Record for the world’s longest oral lecture by 18 hours, 42 minutes and 39 seconds.
Speaking to the media at a press conference held at Graphic Era University later in the evening, Mishra said the intent behind his endeavour was to inspire his students and become a role model for them. “I wanted to show students the importance of hard work… because they look up to you. I want them to feel connected whenever I teach; I believe in teaching with passion”, the 26-year-old faculty said.
His desire “to be different” and book a place in the Guinness book of world records came after immense hard work; the biggest challenge was preparing the content for this lecture, a process that took a year and a half. Nothing less was the practice of lecturing uninterrupted for 100-110 hours, which he repeated thrice over the last 7 months. “I could not have done without the 100% support and guidance of Prof. Kamal Ghanshala Sir at every stage (president of Graphic Era University)”, said Mishra thanking the entire management and staff of the university.
The desire to beat the current record was kindled in the final year of his engineering degree, when the record was set by a Polish professor in 2009. “My college routine geared me for this, where I began working tirelessly without sleep or rest”, Mishra remarked.
Mishra gave a message for the youth of Dehradun saying that it’s possible to push beyond your own limits through determination, hard work, optimism and unyielding enthusiasm. “I was 100 percent confident that I would achieve the record…I started the lecture on a very positive note and kept the positive energy throughout”, Mishra shared with the press.
When asked whether he would like to challenge his own record in the future, Mishra said that “records are meant to be broken” so he doesn’t intend to do so in the near future but wishes to devote his entire life to teaching and academics, a field he is proud to be a part of. He hopes that the Guinness Book of world records (which is yet to verify confirm the record) continues to have his name in it for a long time.
When quizzed if he had faced any nerve-breaking difficult moments on-road to setting the record, Mishra responded by saying that “there were a few trying moments on the road to setting the record but they hardly posed a threat because of the perfect planning (of the university’s organizing team), which allowed me to take breaks at the right time…there were no technical faults at all”. Mr. Tushar Gupta, Mishra’s colleague and key member of the organizing team, was awarded a cash prize of 10,000 rupees for his valuable assistance throughout the lecture by the University. Others team-members honoured at the ceremony were Gagan Bansal and Kumar Govind, two young faculties of the university, and the 80-strong student team.
Prof. Kamal Ghanshala has announced a double salary appraisal for Arvind Mishra along with an honorarium of 1 lakh rupees. Present at the Press Conference was the top brass of Graphic Era University; including Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) R C Joshi, Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) V K Tiwari, Vice Chancellor (Graphic Era Hill University) Prof. (Dr.) Sanjay Jasola, Senior Advisor Prof. (Dr.) Y P Kumar and S C Sharma, Registrar of Graphic Era University. Prof. Girish Lakhera hosted the felicitation ceremony.
