About The Department
Biotech is a subject which is really in a boom state. The $28 billion biotechnology industry, in a broad sense, uses organisms, cells, or molecules isolated from cells to make products or solve problems. Scientific breakthroughs in the 1970s allowed companies to capitalize on biotechnology techniques to make products in health care (medical), crop production and agriculture, non food (industrial) uses of crops and other products (e.g. biodegradable plastics, vegetable oil, biofuels) and environmental uses. Today, the industry's nearly 1,457 companies employ more than 179,000 people in research, development, manufacturing, sales and other types of jobs. The biotech industry is predicted to employ a large number of people, with hundreds of high-paying scientific and technical jobs, coming open every year.
Department of Biotechnology at Graphic Era University has come into existence in year 2008. Department is currently running B.Sc (Biotechnology), B. Tech (Biotechnology), B. Tech. (Biotechnology) Integrated MBA, M.Sc (Biotechnology), and M.Sc (Microbiology). Apart from this, new course M.Tech (Biotechnology) is going to start from the year 2012-2013.
Department has total 15 well experienced and qualified faculties from IITs,NITs, DRDO, G.B Pant University, Delhi University, IVRI, Gurkul Kangari University and Jamia Hamdard along with 08 nonteaching staff and 21 research scholars. Faculties of Biotech department having national and international exposures are highly devoted to teaching as well as research. Department is also actively involved in organizing conferences, seminars, workshops and placements of students since its genesis.
Department of Biotechnology has separate well equipped laboratories such as Plant Tissue Culture, Animal Cell Culture, Recombinant DNA Technology, Microbiology laboratory and Sterilization facility etc. for students and research scholars and also got the laboratory approvals from different regulatory agencies as per the requirements like DBT, Government of India Approved Institutional Biosafety Committee, and Institutional Animal Ethics Committee etc. Several projects funded by Uttarakhand State Biotechnology Department (USBD) and Uttarakhand state council for science and technology (UCOST) are currently running in the department. Most of the students have been placed in reputed Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology companies like- Panacea Biotec. Ltd., Windlass Pharmaceutical Ltd, Parag Dairy etc. Students have also qualified many national level examinations such as CSIR-NET, ICMR, DBT and GATE and well placed in national and international research labs.
