About The Department
The Department of Civil Engineering was established in the year 2007 and has grown over the years into one of the finest centers of training in the field of civil engineering. The Department offers a four-year course leading to the Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering and two-year courses leading to Master’s degree in two major specializations of civil engineering (viz., Structural Engineering and Geo-informatics Engineering) as well as PhD in Civil Engineering. The laboratories are equipped with excellent and advanced equipments and provide all the facilities for advanced research in the field of civil engineering as well as Earthquake Engineering.
The Department is known for its reputed faculty having expertise in diverse fields. It has built up a wide research potential. The research programmes of the department are funded by various agencies such as Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Department of Science and Technology (GOI), BARC, IWRS (IIT Roorkee), IIRS (India) etc. The faculty of the department continues to strive loftier by exploring new frontiers of knowledge, imparting the latest technical knowledge to the students and conducting high quality of research. The faculty also renders technical advice on live engineering problems to various Government and Private Sector companies throughout country.
Why Civil Engineering
Civil engineering is the oldest branch of engineering which is growing right from the stone age of civilization. American society of civil engineering defines civil engineering as the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and physical sciences gained by study, experience and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize economically the materials and forces of the nature for the progressive well being of man.
Well, Civil engineering is also probably the most diverse stream of engineering which covers Building materials and construction techniques, Structural engineering, Geotechnical engineering, Surveying, Transportation engineering, Water resource and environmental engineering and many such other streams. Now days, civil engineering also deals with the earthquake engineering aspects, computer applications in civil engineering and management techniques etc.
Civil Engineers play a vital role in the development of infrastructure. A civil engineer has to conceive, plan, estimate, get approval, create and maintain all civil engineering activities. The role and challenges for a civil engineer is quite diverse like, planning new townships and extension of existing towns, building the suitable structures for the rural and urban areas for various utilities, building river navigation and flood control projects, devise systems for control and efficient flow of traffic, providing and maintaining solid and waste water disposal systems, earthquake resistant design of civil engineering structures and many such more. Apart from this fast growing industrialization has put heavy responsibilities on civil engineers to preserve and protect environment.
Of course, civil engineering is not an easy task but same time a career after civil engineering is highly rewarding. There are jobs that involve supervision, construction, design and analyzes of private as well as public projects, such as dams, highways, canals, water sewages and bridges. The profession demands excellent skills for both administration and supervision of projects. Excellence and responsibility are important factors associated with the job. In other words, whenever you see or read about any popular landmark in the world (iconic works like Golden Gate Bridge, The Gateway of India, Burj Khalifa, etc.), there is a civil engineer involved in its construction.
Civil engineering probably has the maximum slots for job in governments sectors like IES, PSUs and State public service commissions. Not only in government sectors, private sectors even have more demand of skilled civil engineers. If we talk about research, civil engineering offers a lot to do. Either it is core or interdisciplinary research, civil engineering covers a big domain of research and development field.
