About The Department
Petroleum, referred to as Black Gold, is a naturally occurring substance made up dominantly of complex mixture of hydrocarbons and their compounds along with minor amounts of inorganic substances. Owing to its wide usage in almost all walks of life, petroleum industry is flourishing all over the world. Realizing the cardinal needs of well trained human resource for this industry, Graphic Era University took a new initiative to start a four year multidisciplinary, industry oriented B. Tech program in Petroleum Engineering with effect from the academic year 2012-13. This innovative programme entails a synergy of many disciplines such as geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geomathematics, paleogeobiology, engineering components-chemical, electrical, mechanical, electronics, civil, metallurgical and computer applications, economics and management. With inputs and help of experienced and well recognized experts from Petroleum Industry, Institute of Petroleum Exploration, Indian Institute of Petroleum, eminent professors from IIT, similar courses run in India and abroad, the academic curriculum of this programme has been designed.
The course structure covers the entire gamut of petroleum industry – both upstream and downstream. Industrial visit and exposure to field based experience is an integral part of this programme. Projects are planned on problem oriented research.
In the coming years the era of oil would be changing to the era of gas. The unconventional hydrocarbon resources and alternative energy resources have already drawn attention to augment the increasing demand of hydrocarbons and energy. The process of making oil and gas available in huge quantities needed to sustain our industrial economy and maintain our standard of living is quite challenging. Petroleum engineers are trained to face these challenges. Oil and gas must be discovered; its quantity and production potential must be assessed; optimal extraction methods must be established to maximize recovery; and it must be transported from the point of production to the refinery and then stored. All these processes need to be carried out in an environmentally benign manner. Petroleum engineers must be multi faceted in order to cover all these aspects. The prospection, production, exploration, production and development of petroleum field, storage, transport, refining, production of petroleum product require well trained petroleum engineers.
Well trained petroleum engineer has a wide variety of choice of career opportunities. The industry uses a variety of types of equipment, and careers are also open in sales engineering. Some of the testing and service functions in the industry are performed by “service companies” which rely heavily on petroleum engineers. Increasingly important career opportunities for petroleum engineers are opening up in governmental and regulatory bodies. However, the most rewarding and challenging career opportunities are found in the Oil and Gas producing companies.
